So here I am, again! This time I have two great news to tell you!

The first one is that OpenMW 0.17.0 has been released!
Here’s a video that shows the features:

If you don’t know this GREAT project you definitely have to check it out!

The second news is about Morrowind Overhaul. The last testing package has been sent now.
This means that if all goes right this will be the only test remained until the release of the full package!

Stay tuned! :D

  1. Fantastic news, this really made my day! So, OpenMW is just a stand alone game engine with better modability? Sounds great. Is it also compatible with MO?

    • correct, it’s based on the ogre graphics engine and it’s open source. so you can basically mod the game into what ever you want*only limit is your programming skills, really*. been following the project myself since version 0.8.0+, really looking forward to it.

I just hope Bethesda doesn’t all the sudden start to care when it’s done and we see a “cease and desist letter, game over” update on Open Morrowinds website. because Omw + Land mods + graphics mods + 100% modifiable = all newer elder scrolls games moot. imho

  2. Öhm … what is now better : Overhaul 3.0 Graphic, Water, Lights, Shadows, ore OpenMW … ?

    • These are two totally different projects.

The Overhaul is working with the Morrowing game we all know and love, it’s still the same engine, albeit with the many modifications added by modders.

Open Morrowind runs on a fresh, custom-built engine, which means it is not constricted to the same technical limitations as the old Morrowind engine is, but understandibly pushes development effort and time beyond anything a modder would have to deal with. Over time, since the Open MW developers can move along with current technology (within reasonable bounds), Open MW will feature more advanced graphical options (emphasis on advanced, not simply ‘better’, since ‘eye of the beholder’ etc.), which the original Morrowind engine was never intended for.

tl;dr you won’t be able to use the Open MW features for your Morrowind game, since these are two independent engines, with Open MW being the more recent development with all the difficulties and advantages that go along with it.

  3. Hey i want to know something…will the NPCs and the playable character’s shadows replaced by real-time shadows instead? The default shadows look really crap, as well as the “gears” shadows not being right at all, for example you have a square-ish shield and the shadow show a round shield.

And also, are you using MGE XE’s latest version? i think it’s v.0.9.8.

  4. Can we have it for Friday? It would make my weekend awesome :)

Seriously, you guys rock. Set up a paypal donation button, I demand that you take my money.

  5. And that’s why I should have checked the forum for testing opportunities :(

  6. This didn’t come out before my summer ended :(

  7. As far as I understand it, Open MW is an open source implementation of the Morrowind framework and is aimed to be able to run all the original Morrowind ESM, ESP resource files. Therefore, MGSO resources should be able to work on Open MW (as long as the MGSO team is willing to aim it in that direction too). Patches like MCP / MGEXE shouldn’t be needed anymore because the Open MW framework will allow enhanced graphics and correct bugs natively.
But the Open MW project is still far from completion. Yet it is a great project and I hope it will reach its goals even if it takes a few more years.

  8. I don’t mean to be that guy, but you can’t say “I have two great news to tell you”. It doesn’t make sense. “News” isn’t plural, like you wouldn’t have one “new” to tell us, then tell us another “new” and then it becomes “news”. News can be one piece of information, or a thousand.

Sorry, I’m really looking forward to this! ;)

    • WTF?

      • Just sayin’. If I were speaking, say, German, and I made a mistake, I’d rather someone told me than go on making it forever.

      • So how do I say that I have news and there are two of them?

        • You would say “I have two pieces of news”. You have to add something in that can have separate items, like “pieces”. “2 news items” would also work. “News” is usually treated like a singular noun, unlike (for example) “sheep”, which is usually treated like it’s plural. So you can say “2 sheep” just fine, but “2 news” is incorrect.

    • WHAT THE FUUUUUCK

    • It is a mass noun! :) It is both plural and singular, however you are right in that sense. In grammar news should be used in a singular form, however it can mean more than one “news.” (At least in American English, as you stated).

“I have some great news for you” can mean either one piece of news or two or more. If you look up the etymology of it, pretty much everything listed is plural! Which is kind of funny seeing as we do treat it as singular. But there are plenty of other words that we do that with as well… Like team in American English is used as singular (the team is doing xxx); although, in British English it is used as plural. :)

ANYWAY, I would like to be corrected as well, just because you can’t learn otherwise. You do something wrong all your life, it become habitual, and hard to fix. And!! More to the point of topic, I cannot wait to see this finished!! College just started up for me, and I’m still impatient as can be even though I know I won’t be able to play nearly as much as I’d like.

    • Actually news is already plural, should have been your point. Besides if your first language isn’t English than it might be more difficult to remember all the grammar.

  9. I’ve seen lot’s of videos of what the overhaul looks like – any before and after comparison pictures? I’m fairly new to the Elder Scrolls series so seeing a before and after would be something I’d be interested in checking out!

    Thanks. :)

    PS: Thanks for your hardwork!

  10. Yeah I really hope it comes out today or tomorrow. I promised my gf that we would play this as soon as the Overhaul came out or when it becomes September.

  11. Amazing work you’re doing! =D Looking forward to the Overhaul 3.0. I have a question, though. I have an old (1.3 or something) version of the Overhaul. Will I need to uninstall Morrowind and the old Overhaul completely before attempting to install this when it comes out?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Yes, you would have to reinstall. :)

      • When installing v2 the automated installation got stuck when it went to Morrowind settings. It opened and closed data files, then options and after closing options it just got stuck there. I waited for 15 minutes just to be sure before power-cycling (mouse & keyboard disabled).

Before installing again I ahd installed and uninstalled it some time ago. Could that have caused the problem? Last time the installation took like 5 minutes overall.

      • Sorry to be continually asking stupid questions here, but Morrowind’s uninstall function doesn’t seem to be working very well. Will manually deleting the Morrowind folder do the trick, or are there registry entries and whatnot that this will not fix?

Or maybe the installer will detect previous installs and try to do something about them?

  12. awesome

  13. .. Im too fucking damn impatient. Have been watching this site ever since this was posted.

    • chill… :-)

      • Im trying to :c

        • Will be out soon they are glad to see that you are so enthusiastic about the project they feel very accomplished with so many people appreciating there work please hold on just a little while longer the Overhaul will be up soon they are just finishing the documentation which is very time consuming

    • Me too like when will it be out???

      • If all goes well within the next week the actual installer is finished right now the developers are working on the documentation for the Overhaul such as credits manuals readme ect.. it will be done soon just a very time consuming process and cant be released until it is done

  14. Dont worry – i got your back =)

  15. Hmm haven’t seen any updates in a while, I guess they’ve all been infected by the Guild Wars 2 bug :-p. I don’t blame them, I wouldn’t want to mod either after an hour into that game.

    • Nope they are just finishing documentation for the Overhaul they actually have little time for anything else and they are hard at work finishing the documentation so that they can release it asap

      • Its good to have at least one guy in the know providing some background progress details.

        Thanks Alex!

      • Wouldn’t it be less time consuming to just have one person, or even a few people if they have enough, doing the documentation while everybody else is working on sorting out bugs in the overhaul/installer? You should already have a good idea of what you’re using before you begin, and it takes a good deal less time to alter the documentation when you find something that needs to be changed, than to wait until you’re done and write out all the documentation then.

        • The bugs are all fixed we are just waiting on the documentation to be finished you have to understand that this documentation includes the credits to all the developers that worked on the project as well as to all those that made the mods included in the Overhaul it is very important that they make sure everything is done…. I thank you for your patience and Kingpix appreciates it the Overhaul will be done and released as soon as everything is ready until then you will have to remain patient please continue to show your support as the appreciation is much appreciated by the developers that are doing this in there free time as well they are doing this with no other benefit then the pride of there work and the appreciation of there fans these things are not simple and are not always done in a perfect manner but the developers are doing the best with what they have and above all they are trying to make this release as perfect as possible which is why it took so long to begin with a late release is better then a non working or in complete release ….. so many things can come up when developing such a large scale project and thats just how it is thank you again for your verbal support for the project

  16. I don’t suppose there’s an estimate for when the documentation will be finished and the overhaul released? I don’t intend to rush anyone; I am just wondering for planning purposes.

And I should say again that you guys are all awesome for doing this!

    • Best to plan for week or so these documents are very tedious work…right now they are too busy to post an official update but as soon as they are done they will let you know and the developers thank you fro your understanding and support

  17. HOOZAH!!!!

  18. Is there any way to make this more public? -> More people interested -> more developers -> more of everything! You guys should contact online retro game modding news sites or anything of the like ;) .
I mean, if you guys could like reach the steam community this whole thing would probably boom up, as it should.

    • @Zedd

We’ve been working hard to raise the project’s visibility, but you’re right that there always is more that can be done.

We’d love if you would help us raise awareness. You can even join the PR team. Or you can help us in the following ways; 1) like you said “try to reach the steam community” but I am not sure how to do that really, 2) Find gaming websites and contact them about our project and ask for them to do a report on us (we have plenty of information about the project online and I did an article for freegamer earlier in the year), 3) Start new threads on gaming and programming forums about OpenMW with links to our various pages, 4) Tell people you know about the project and what’s it’s trying to accomplish.

      • Once the installer is done I’ll do some posts on some forums I sometimes spend time on. Not a steam user so I wouldn’t know how to promote there, but i do know it has the biggest gaming community. I’m thinking now to put this on some 4chan boards and ask to help and spread it, knowing 4chan, it can be amazing what those guys can do when you get them interested :) . All I need is some nice written lines and some good looking pictures.

        • Morrowind Graphics Overhaul and OpenMW are separate projects. You can download OpenMW now. Good idea of posting on 4chan. I never thought of that.

          and the blurb about us.

OpenMW is a new game engine for the role playing game Morrowind. It is open source, cross platform (currently supporting OS X, Linux, and Windows), and written in pure c++. We are designing an engine that runs faster and is vastly more modifiable. We want to preserve Morrowind and provide modders a better engine and tool kit for creating their works. While Bethesda will not release the Morrowind’s formulas to us, they encourage our project and we in turn actively encourage our users to purchase Morrowind on Steam. So don’t worry; we’re not out to destroy Bethesda Softworks.

For the engine and editor we seeking individuals who are familiar with:
          C++
          Qt
          Ogre3d
          Bullet physics library
          Netimmerse/Gamebryo engine (especially Morrowind)
          Bug hunting
          Reverse engineering gameplay formulas

Primary Goal: Our initial goal is to create a functioning engine for playing Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon, and all user created mods. This will be version 1.0 of OpenMW and it is our team’s most important goal. We are past the halfway point to 1.0.

          Future Goals (post 1.0):

-Allow much greater modability: change game rules, create new spell effects, etc
          through advanced scripting.

-Fix system design bugs, like the “dirty” GMST entries in mods, and the
          savegame “doubling” problem.

          -Continue improving performance.

-Improve the interface and journal systems.

-(Possibly) Improve game mechanics, physics, combat and AI.

-(Possibly) Support multiplayer at some point.

-(Possibly) Improve graphics to use more modern hardware.

OpenMW is released under the GNU General Public License version 3, and all source code has been written completely from scratch. It is built on various other open source tools, most notably OGRE for graphics, and Bullet for collision (and possibly physics).

          Development Status
OpenMW is in the intermediate stage. There is terrain, cell, water rendering, collisions, animations, camera modes, and player movement. We are at the point where we can now begin implementing many skills, attributes, and abilities.

          What Technologies Does OpenMW Use?
OpenMW is built with various open source tools and libraries:
          Programming language: C++
          Graphics: OGRE3d
          Physics: Bullet
          Sound: OpenAL and Audiere
          GUI: MyGUI
          Input: OIS

The ESM/ESP and BSA loading code was written from scratch, but with much help from available community-generated documentation.

Likewise, the NIF (proprietary 3D mesh) loading code was written with the help of available online information. Special thanks to the NIFLA / NifTools gang!
(For an additional list of the technologies in use, see Development Environment Setup: Third-Party Libraries and Tools.)

          How Do I Help?
Join the official OpenMW forum and visit our #openmw IRC channel at FreeNode. Tell your friends about our project! We always need programmers and passionate individuals! Checking out our Issue Tracker and submitting a patch for a bug is a good way to get started.

          • Hehe, didn’t you know /v/ is full of Morrowind lovers, and that board is being visited by thousands a day, and that it is probably full of amateur developers because it’s a ‘veteran’ gaming board? ;)
The thing is that you have to bring it in a few lines, if it catches on i think you can have a score of new developers, if it doesn’t, reposts will likely enoy them. So it’s a quite delicate job.

          • oh, probably more change on /vg/.

          • chance, goddamn i’m a ***** idiot.

  19. Are you able, at this time, to not necessarily say an official date, but maybe an “any day now” release date?

If not, its cool. I’ll just keep checking the main page every day like I have been. :D

  20. Quick question, I know the focus on this version was a better installer, but are there any other graphical/performance/… improvements? Is there a changelog available anywhere?

  21. So excited! Can’t believe this and Black Mesa are coming out at around the same time!

  22. Man I’m so pumped for this mod. I’ve been meaning to do another playthrough of Morrowind, and this project has just provided me with the perfect excuse. I recently tried to install a whole bunch of mods for Skyrim (using the S.T.E.P Guide – http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11) but I kept getting CTD’s so eventually I just gave up. Either Skyrim is too unstable to handle the number of mods I was using (I was running on v1.5 so by the way) or computer hardware just couldn’t handle it. But anyway, for those who are wondering when Morrowind Overhaul Project will finally be released, personally I would predict the project to be released on the 10th of September. Keep up the great work guys; your dedication up to this point has been astronomical and we all really appreciate the work you modders are doing. Morrowind truly is the greatest game I have ever played, and its wonderful to see it still being kept alive after all these years.

  23. Oh man, this is nice, Sotha Sil expanded (from the same maker as Deus Ex Machina) is also coming out soon, time to reinstall my morrowind for the 100th time I think!

  24. I have 1 question, I have kinda of old computer so I was wondering if there are system requirements for this or 2.0.
My computer specs are: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ 2.21 Ghz,
    2 GB RAM,
    ATI Radeon HD 3650 AGP
    Windows XP
    Compaq Presario
( I downloaded 2.0, and had the settings pretty low, and was getting between 10-20 fps, but I also think I had a program slowing my computer down which I have since gotten rid of since. I reinstalled Morrowind and was considering trying the overhaul again.) Thanks in advance.

    • When I said this or 2.0 I meant 3.0 or 2.0 sorry.

      • Well if u format and reinstall your OS. (win 7 is faster) you even your odds. Anyways, if morrowind original is smooth i dont see why you couldnt install smaller mods one by one until it lags out.

Graphics mods you should skip maybe.

      • Thanks for the recommendations, I’m still learning but once I get a grasp on this stuff I’ll probably buy a better PC but so far I have heard a lot of different things about AMD and Intel, what processor would you recommend?

    • In All honesty, I doubt your PC would be able to play morrowind overhaul 3.0 in even slightly above the lowest setting. Old parts are old parts, You should either get a new computer or heavily upgrade the one you have.

  25. I’m beginning to think the cake is a lie…

  26. Any ETA when the documentation will be done?

  27. I am going to laugh so hard if Black Mesa comes out before this.

  28. BTW will Wyre Mash work with Morrowind Overhaul to update and transfer my current save games across?

  29. Not to sound like a whiny little girl, but its been close to 2 weeks now since the last update. I can’t wait much more, I’m so pumped for this! :) Surely the documentation can’t take much longer?

  30. OMG RELEASE ALREADY

  31. thanks for all the great work! really looking forward to the next release

  32. Well I have gotten at least another 30 people aware of this Overhaul for you guys. More people to replay Morrowind! The best RPG ever made!

  33. I check this site at least twice a day…. I think I need help.

  34. same here!

  35. Well its been a week since the last ETA (which said a week until the project is released). Every day that this project is overdue from now on Im going to punch a baby in the face.

    • well, they are testing the complete package now, it seems it will take some more days. :(

      • More accurately the last package is tested and done, and they are just working on the attached documentation. Writing large amounts of stuff, especially technical stuff, can be a lot more time consuming than it sounds.

Still, another ETA would be nice. No hard feelings about missing the first one — I wasn’t surprised, these things happen — but probably the team has a better idea now when the overhaul and documentation will finally be released.

        • there is also some more testing going on, check the forums…

          • That’s a change, then. Last I heard testing was complete! Huh. I guess they really may not know how long it’ll take for the final product to be released, then.

          • The “installer” testing is done there is closed beta testing but the final build package for the installer is done and the developers are also still in the process of writing the documents for the entire package you should be expecting an official update any day

  36. or here:

    http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1406455-req-new-installer-testing-again-and-again-again-again/

Things to do until final release:
    Software DONE
    Installation Guide DONE
    Personalization Guide DONE
MGE Options Preview Documents TO DO
    FAQ Document TO DO
    Credits Document TO DO
    Building final Data package DONE

  37. How the hell writing FAQ takes so long?? WTF?

    • The “installer” testing is done there is closed beta testing but the final build package for the installer is done and the developers are also still in the process of writing the documents for the entire package you should be expecting an official update any day now…

  38. Ahh too late. Black Mesa is released! You better off wait o couple of weeks now =D

  39. black mesa literally came out before this trololo.

    looking forward to release

  40. Yep, Black Mesa is out. I’m still wait for MO anyway. Btw, they use morrowind’s dwemer ruin ambient sound in Unforseen Consequences xD You know, that metallic ball rolling sound… immediately recognized…

  41. So is their just one person writing those documents? If so, is he alright?

  42. I can understand everyones frustration that there has not yet been a public release of the new MGSO V3.0 but… sometimes these projects can run into complications the developers can become tired other life dramas can happen as well as the fact this is not that simple the original release assumption was overly optimistic there were alot of problems in the installer its self that they were trying to fix as MGSO v2.0 installer had so many problems and they did not want a repeat of this….to them this is also an art and every artist wants perfection in there art whatever it maybe which is also good wisdom to live by….if they were to have released the project any sooner everyone would have had problems constant posts and complaints people posting trying to figure out whats wrong …. it wasnt worth it to the developers and in reality once the project is released all of the Mod developers as well as all of the consumers will be delighted that the developers took so much time and effort to perfect the Credits of the project as well as the installer and the compatibility between the mods… you will have full complete and easy to use instructions that show you how to run the installer what a certain mods effect is you will be able to see previews or look up the developers that created the mods…. you will be able to see and know everything that was put into this project and when you do you will realize why this had to take so long and im sure all of you will be more then grateful for it and the developers of this project greatly appreciate that as much as any artist can there admirers thank you again for your patience and let me ask you once more as I know how much this pains us both with anticipation of the release wait just a few more weeks it may even be less as they are truly trying to get this out to everyone …. you have my respect for following this project even threw this long hold as it shows to the developers there work is not wasted and to those of us that helped test the installer the developers and I greatly respect you for it if you need anything from Kingpix and he isnt responding it is purely because of his workload he is impossibly over worked so dont feel left out if he dosnt answer right away… thank you
